Purpose, Focus, and Organization

The response is fully sustained and consistently focused within purpose, audience, and task ; and it has clear claim and effective organizational structure creating coherence and completeness. The response includes the following:

       Strongly maintained claim with little or no loosely related material

       Clearly addresses alternate or opposing claim

       Skillful use of a variety of transitional strategies t o clarify the relationships between and among ideas

       Logical progression of ideas from beginning to end with a satisfying introduction and conclusion

       Appropriate style and tone established and maintained

Focus and Purpose

The extent to which the response establishes and maintains an opinion/position/claim and a clear understanding of purpose and audience and completes all parts of the task.

       Demonstrates a thorough and insightful understanding of the task, purpose and audience.

       Establishes and maintains a precise claim to argue the issue presented in the task.

       Completes all parts of the task and may go beyond the limits of the task.

Organization

The extent to which the response demonstrates a cohesive and unified structure, paragraphing, and transitional strategies to support the logical progression of ideas presented in the argument.

       Very effectively demonstrates a cohesive and unified structure that supports the argument with an engaging introduction and a strong conclusion.

       Uses effective and skillful paragraphing and transitional strategies throughout.

 

 

Evidence and Elaboration

The response provides thorough, convincing, and credible support, citing evidence for the writer’s claim that includes the effective use of sources, facts, and details . The response includes most of the following:

  • Smoothly integrated, thorough, and relevant evidence, including precise references to sources
  • Effective use of a variety of elaborative techniques to support the claim, demonstrating an understanding of the topic and text
  • Clear and effective expression of ideas, using precise language
  • Academic and domain-specific vocabulary clearly appropriate for the audience and purpose
  • Varied sentence structure , demonstrating language facility

 

Content Development/Elaboration

The extent to which the response provides credible support for the claim(s) and argument(s) using valid reasoning and relevant text-based evidence* (i.e., facts, data/statistics, authoritative quotes, rhetorical questioning, anecdotes).

       Very effectively develops arguments with logical reasoning and effectively integrates relevant, text-based evidence to support the writers claim

       Uses a variety of elaborative techniques.

       Convincingly addresses opposing claims or counterarguments.

Language, Use, Voice, and Style

The extent to which the response establishes and consistently maintains a style and tone appropriate to the audience, demonstrates effective control of language, and uses domain-specific word choice and varied sentence structure.

       Demonstrates a very effectively style, precise control of language , domain-specific word choice , and a well- defined sense of audience .

       Uses well-structured and varied sentences .

 

 

 

Conventions of Standard English

The response demonstrates an adequate command of basic conventions. The response may include the following:

·  Some minor errors in usage but no patterns of errors

·  Adequate use of punctuation, capitalization, sentence formation, and spelling.

 

Mechanics and Conventions

The extent to which the response demonstrates control of mechanics and conventions, including grammar, punctuation, and spelling.

       Contains few or no errors in grammar, mechanics, punctuation and spelling.
